Various Moods will continue for 15 hours, daily, alongside the other events, during the gallery hours, until Saturday, June 16.

We have been experiencing a “new performance turn” together with an “experiential” (Dorothea Von Hantelmann) and “social” (Claire Bishop) one and, implicitly, transformation. There is a sense of safety in determining this. Its nature and entities, on the other hand, require a yet another new form of understanding, one that transforms once again the comfort of theory and language as we know it, a bit of “changing change” and determination (Bruno Latour, Marten Spangberg).

What happens if instead of subjectivity culturally performed in identitarian terms, we bring into the performance conversation notions like “consciousness” and its „subconscious” margins or subtext, and approach performativity as a dynamic and often strange hybrid dosing between perception and cognition, percept and concept, where any “self” is continuously unsettling and the only intuitively „stable” resting thing is the moment and the space of the affective precognition gap? The „half second” of activated indeterminacy, of life, before and when consciousness officially starts performing.

Durational Life Theory summons in Bucharest, for this two-weeks interval, artists active in performance with different background (choreography, visual art, theory, literature) that have at least two important reasons to be summoned together: they all escape determination and labels to the extent of even giving up humanity as spectators and performing for other species (Krõõt Juurak) and turn their subjectivities into performing strategies engaging them in a durational life theory choreography. What comes out is an encounter of aesthetic consciousness, cutting through discourses to their core intensity. It will be life and it will not be quite life, it will be durational and again not quite, it will be theory and not theory.

One aspect of the invitation extended to the artists involved was to curate their time themselves according to how their performative practice relates to theory, in all its manifestations in contemporary dance and performance, from the need for articulation, inside or outside the work (concept or thinking in relation to performativity or esthetics at large, and also un-esthetically related fields), to theory as language (verbal, representation, score, choreography) and none the least theory as format (lecture, talk). It is for them to choose what needs to be made visible and what has to stay, modality-wise, implicit and invisible.

The initial plan was to just safely situate this plea for signifying and durational indeterminacy or for language used in dark ways, “until the heartbeat stops” (Meg Stuart) and the very idea of performing does change. And to invite you to the exciting quest of situating references and layers of meaning in the discourse that traverses the durational life theory, but then I chose to be, at the same time, inside and outside. (Adriana Gheorghe)
